GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Hampton University lacrosse team opened its 2019 season on Sunday by falling to Furman 26-6.
Hampton recorded goals by Elliott Johnson, III with two, while
Lonnie Jones, Derian Williams-Sturdivant,
Nathan Brungot and
Jonathan Napier added one each.
Napier scored the first goal of the season for Hampton with 10:24 left in the opening period as Hampton trailed 2-1. The Paladins scored the next four to close the opening frame up 6-1.Â
Furman pushed the lead to 9-1 before Johnson scored the first of his two goals on an extra-man advantage with 4:40 left to bring the Pirates to 9-2. Furman tallied three more including one to close the half to beat the halftime horn as the hosts held a 12-2 lead at intermission.
Hampton put two on the board in the third period as Jones scored at the 10:13 mark and then assisted on the goal by Williams-Sturdivant with 5:53 left as Hampton trailed 14-5. Johnson tallied his second of the day with 9:32 left to finish the scoring for Hampton.
The Pirates now play their next four games at home starting on Saturday at 2pm when they face Greensboro College.
