HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team opened play today in the Pirate Invitational with a pair of games against former conference member Delaware State as Hampton swept the Hornets 9-0 and 5-3.
GAME 1 – Hampton 9, Delaware St. 0
Hampton got the scoring going in the second inning as
Daniella Milloy singled to score
Samyah Richardson who had reached on a fielders choice.Â
Morgan Crawford hit a fly ball that was dropped for an error to score
Kial Watts who had earlier singled, and a sac fly from
Kennedy Hickey scored the third run as the Lady Pirates took a 3-0 lead.
In the third,
Brianna Anderson beat out an infield single and advanced to second before a single by
Janae Lyles scored her to lead 4-0. Richardson singled to left and took second on the throw as pinch-runner
Joya Greer scored to give the hosts a 5-0 lead after three.
The Lady Pirates put four across in the bottom of the fourth as Crawford singled before being replaced by pinch-runner
Casey Walker. A bunt by
Kennedy Hickey put her on second after a throwing error which allowed Walker to score. Hickey stole third before an infield single by
DaSha Hill and a groundout by
Taylor Warrick plated Hickey.Â
Brianna Anderson drove in Hill with a single and she scored on a double by
Janae Lyles to lead 9-0.
Hotetz got the win after relieving
Allyson Babinsack after one out. She allowed four hits and struck out three in the shutout win. Hill, Anderson and
Janae Lyles had two hits each, while Lyles drove in two and Anderson scored twice.
GAME 2 – Hampton 5, Delaware St. 3
After giving up single runs in the second and fourth, Hampton evened the game with a two-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Hill beat out an infield single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Warrick. She stole third and scored on a double by Anderson. Lyles scored Anderson with a single up the middle.
Hampton put up three more in the fifth as Crawford opened with a double to left and
Sarah Kollas followed with a single to score pinch-runner
Joya Greer.Â
Daniella Milloy pushed Kollas to second with a single and a bunt single by Hill loaded the bases before a forceout by Warrick scored Kollas to put Hampton up 4-2. Anderson ended the scoring for Hampton with a sac fly to score Milloy putting Hampton up 5-2.
The Hornets got the bases loaded and scored a run before Warrick laid out to snare a line drive by Taylor Leydig to end the game.
Hill was 3-for-4 and Kollas was 2-for-3 to lead Hampton at the plate. Anderson drove in two while five different Lady Pirates scored a run each. Freshman
Emily Workman earned her second win.
Hampton returns to action on Saturday for a 2pm scheduled start against North Carolina Central University.
