SOFTBALL HEADS INTO CONFERENCE WITH SWEEP OF COPPIN

Off to best start in 12 years at 15-5

HAMPTON, Va. – Freshman Kennedy Hickey drove in five runs on the day, four in game one, as Hampton swept former conference foe Coppin State 8-0 and 11-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

With the wins, Hampton now heads into Big South Conference action with a 15-5 record and is the best start in the last 12 years as the 2007 team went 16-4 in its first 20 games.

Hickey's three-run triple to right-center broke open a seven-run first inning for the Lady Pirates as Daniella Milloy singled in a run and Taylor Warrick tripled in two to highlight the early outburst.

In the second, with one out Kial Watts singled to right and advanced on a groundout before Hickey doubled down the left field line to push the lead to 8-0.

Senior Allyson Babinsack earned the win throwing a two-hit shutout to raise her record to 3-2 on the year.  Five different Lady Pirates had one hit each in game one.

A two-run error broke open the bottom of the first in game two as Watts singled in a run to start the scoring prior to the two-run error as Hampton took a 3-0 lead.  Another error in the second inning scored Casey Walker who had a one-out single putting Hampton up 4-0.

Coppin State pushed two across in the top of the third byt Hampton responded with three in its half of the inning.  Brianna Anderson walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Milloy single.  Morgan Crawford ended that scoring burst with a single to score Milloy putting Hampton up 7-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Watts drove in a pair with a single to left and later scored on a Sarah Kollas triple to highlight a four-run outburst putting Hampton up 11-2.

Allie Hotetz threw 1.1 innings with one hit and one strikeout to earn the win.  Watts was 2-for-2 with three RBIs as seven other Lady Pirates had one hit each.

Hampton now starts Big South Conference action hosting Campbell in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
