SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior
Jermaine Marrow had 30 points and senior
Akim Mitchell added a career-high 26 as Hampton won for the fourth straight game with a 92-71 win over USC Upstate to close out the regular season on Saturday.
With the win, Hampton finished in a four-way tie for fifth place in its first Big South season and will host Longwood on Tuesday at 7 pm in the 8-9 matchup,
The Pirates used a 19-6 run over a five-minute span midway through the first half to open a 12-point advantage at 32-20 behind a layup by Marrow with 8:20 left. That lead eventually grew to 17 points on the heels of a 3-ball from
Kalin Fisher with 25 seconds left to lead 48-31.
In the second half, Upstate trimmed the deficit to 11 on a pair of occasions in the first three minutes as an Everette Hammond 3-pointer with 16:51 left brought the host to 59-48. Hampton took the lead to as much as 28 points on a Eugene Marshall, III free throw with 2:14 left.
Joining them in double figures were
Trevond Barnes with 15 points and five rebounds and Fisher with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Marrow recorded his eighth game of the year with at least 30 points while adding six rebounds and six assists. Mitchell surpassed his previous career high of 21 done twice, most recently against Radford on Feb. 7.
For the game, Hampton was 37-of-68 from the floor (54.4%) and out-rebounded USC Upstate 41-31.
