SECOND HALF RUN LEADS PIRATES AGAINST VMI

HAMPTON, VA— On a perfect day for lacrosse at Armstrong Stadium, the Hampton University lacrosse team fell 23-9 to visiting Virginia Military Institute on Saturday afternoon to snap their three game winning streak.
 
Hampton recorded goals by Pierce Johnson and Jordan Brown, with three apiece, while Derian Williams-Sturdivant added two, and Melvin Scott, III had one.   Williams-Sturdivant had four assists to lead the team, while Pierce Johnson, Elliott Johnson, III and Lonnie Jones added one helper each.
 
The Keydets scored the first seven goals to take a 7-0 led to close out the first period of play. Derian Williams-Sturdivant put the Pirates on the board off an assist from Elliott Johnson III, to trail 7-1 at the 14:14 mark in the second period.
 
VMI pushed the lead to 16-1 before Jordan Brown drilled the first of his three goals, to make it 16-2 at the 11:48 mark in the second.  VMI would answer with four straight goals to extend their lead 20-2.
 
Hampton would not go away as they answered with four straight goals of their own. Williams-Sturdivant scored his second goal of the day with 5:57 left in the third period to bring the score 20-3. Lonnie Jones assisted Pierce Johnson for his first goal of the day at the 4:18 mark in the third to make it 20-4.
 
The Pirates put five on the board in the fourth period as Johnson scored at the 13:43 mark and then assisted on the goal by Scott III with 5:12 left as Hampton trailed 21-7.  Brown tallied his third goal of the day with two minutes remaining and Pierce Johnson scored his third goal of the day with 1:21 left to finish the scoring for Hampton.
 
The nine goals Hampton scored on VMI is the most the Pirates have scored in a game against the Keydets in the four years of the program.  It is also the most goals the Pirates have scored against a NCAA Division I opponent in the history of the program.
 
The Pirates will host their Senior Day game as they take on New Jersey Institute of Technology April 6 at 2 pm.
