HAMPTON, Va. – After a postponement on Saturday due to rain, the Hampton softball team dropped a Big South Conference doubleheader on Sunday to Winthrop falling 8-4 and 3-0.
In the opener, Hampton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as
Taylor Warrick opened with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
DaSha Hill.Â
Brianna Anderson followed with the first pitch she saw sailing over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
The Eagles clawed back into the game with single runs in the second and third innings before Hampton responded with a pair in its half of the fourth. After one out,
Morgan Crawford reached on an error and
Sarah Kollas followed being hit by a pitch. Both Kollas and pinch-runner
Joya Greer moved up on a passed ball before both scored on a
Samyah Richardson double.
Winthrop broke the game open with four runs in the fifth and followed with single runs in the sixth and seventh for the 8-5 win.
Anderson and
Kial Watts were 2-for-4 to account for half of Hampton's eight hits in game one.Â
Allie Hotetz took the loss throwing all seven innings and allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out four.
Game two saw the Eagles push a run across in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Keleigh Romine and a pair in the fourth on a two-run home run by Blake Wallert. Warrick, Hill, Crawford and Richardson all had one hit each in the game for Hampton.Â
Allyson Babinsack took the loss throwing all seven innings with three strikeouts and eight hits allowed.
The teams will finish off the rain-delayed three-game series with an 11 am single game on Monday morning.
