HAMPTON, Va. – Senior
Jermaine Marrow had 30 points and nine assists, while senior
Greg Heckstall had a pair of three-pointers in the second half to boost Hampton to an 83-80 win over Longwood on Saturday night.
Three-pointers by Shabooty Phillips and
Davion Warren in the first 22 seconds gave the fans an anticipation of how this game was going to run. Shaheem Anthony drained a triple to put Hampton up early 6-3 at the 18:23 mark.
A free throw by Phillips brought the Lancers to 11-10 with 13:29 left in the half, but Hampton (7-9, 2-1) stepped on the gas on a 12-2 run to lead 23-12 after a
Ben Stanley dunk with 7:44 remaining. That advantage grew to 28-14 on a triple by Warren with 6:12 left, but the Lancers roared back on the heels of an 18-5 run to trail 33-32 after a free throw by Jordan Cintron with 37 seconds left in the half. A Marrow layup put Hampton up 35-32 at intermission.
In the second half, Hampton held a nine-point lead on a couple of occasions in the opening stages as a three-point play by Marrow gave the hosts a 45-36 lead with 17:54 left. Longwood got back into the game on the heels of a 12-2 run to lead 48-47 on a Christian Wilson layup at the 13:09 mark. The Pirates regained control after scoring the next 10 points to lead 578-48 after a
Greg Heckstall tip-in with 09:54 remaining.
Longwood would tie the game twice over the next four minutes as a 3-pointer by JaShaun Smith evened the game at 66 with 5:12 left. Another triple by Smith pulled the Lancers to 70-69 at the 3:27 mark, but Heckstall hit a pair of big 3-pointers to give Hampton a 76-69 lead with 1:46 remaining.
Joining Marrow in double figures werer Warren with 16 points,
Ben Stanley with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Heckstall with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Hampton returns home on Thursday to host Winthrop at 7 pm.
