LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Nylah Young scored 15 points and hauled in eight rebounds as Hampton opened its women's basketball season with a 67-45 loss at Liberty on Wednesday night.
Hampton (0-1) jumped out to an early 9-2 lead as Young scored all nine points topped by a jumper off a feed by
Victoria Mason with 5:02 left. A layup by
Dlayla Chakolis with 2:18 remaining in the opening quarter gave the guests an 11-5 lead.
The middle two quarters saw the host Flames outscore Hampton 46-18 as they hit 20-of-35 from the floor (57.1%), while Hampton was 5-of-33 (15.2%).
Victoria Mason had seven points, five assists and three rebounds in her collegiate debut, while
Tia Montagne also had seven points and two assists in her Hampton debut and
Victoria Davis added six points and three steals in her collegiate debut.
Hampton returns to action on December 15 at 4:30 pm against Norfolk State in the Battle of the Bay at Joe Echols Hall.
