GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Hampton softball team swept a pair of games in day two of the East Carolina Pirate Clash on Saturday defeating George Washington 10-3 and DePaul 4-3.
In game one,
Tiera Washington was 2-for-3 with three runs driven in and
Skylar Chavez was 3-for-3 with three runs scored as the Lady Pirates defeated George Washington.
A two-run double for Washington got the Lady Pirates on the board in the bottom of the first to score Jacki Gonzalez and Chavez who singled and walked respectively. Washington scored as
Kiaya Jeusi reached on a fielder's choice to lead 3-0. Hampton pushed another run across in the second as Chavez singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a Jeusi single.
The Pirates broke the game open in the fourth with four runs as Chavez drove in
Mo'ne Davis and
Brianna Anderson. Chavez scored on a double by Washington and she scored on a single through the right side by
Emily Kepple to lead 8-0 after four.
The Colonials scored twice in the top of the fifth and Hampton answered with one in the home half of the inning, but Hampton answered with one in the bottom of the inning. With two outs,
Brianna Anderson walked and went to third as Davis reached on an error. Davis was caught stealing in a rundown that lasted long enough for Anderson to score and put Hampton up 9-2.
George Washington scored again in the top of the sixth and Hampton responded with another one in the bottom of the inning. Gonzalez and Chaves each singled and advanced as Washington walked. She scored on a wild pitch for a 10-3 advantage.
Kennedy Hickey earned the win throwing three innings and allowing four hits for Hampton.
Noelle Doan finished the game throwing four innings and striking out two. Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Kepple was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The nightcap saw Hampton take on DePaul and score a 4-3 win.
Hampton scored an unearned run in the top of the first as with one out, Washington singled to advance Chavez who was hit by a pitch. Both advanced a base on a groundout and Chavez scored as
Kiaya Jeusi reached on an error.
The Lady Pirates pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second as
Lexi Lomax walked and went to second on a single by Anderson. After a Davis sacrifice, Gonzalez scored both with a single down the left field line to lead 3-0.
DePaul scratched two across in the second and Hampton responded with a run in the top of the third. Doubles in the inning by
Janae Lyles and Anderson gave the Lady Pirates a 4-1 lead.
Noelle Doan took the win throwing a complete game allowing five hits and striking out four. Washington was 2-for-4 and Anderson was 2-for-3 in the second game for Hampton.
The Lady Pirates finish off the East Carolina Pirate Clash on Sunday morning facing DePaul again at 9 am.
