ROCK HILL, S.C. –
Ben Stanley paced three in double figures with 31 points as Hampton men's basketball scored a key road victory over Big South Conference leading Winthrop 87-81 on Saturday.
Hampton (13-15, 8-7) used an 11-0 run over a four-minute span to lead 34-24 on a
Jermaine Marrow jumper with 4:25 left in the half. A Chandler Vaudrin 3-ball cut the lead to 36-29 at the 2:37 mark. The Pirates closed the half on a 7-0 spurt as a
Davion Warren jumper gave the Pirates a 43-29 halftime lead.
In the second half, a pair of Stanley free throws 31 seconds into the half gave the Pirates their largest lead at 45-29. Winthrop cut the deficit in half on three occasions, the last on a Chase Claxton dunk at the 13:54 mark to trail 55-47.
Hampton pushed the advantage back up to 15 points on a Stanley 3-point play with 8:55 remaining for a 70-55 lead. The Eagles made their final run cutting the lead to three on two occasions, as Hunter Hale hit three free throws with 92 seconds left to trail 81-78. Warren,
Greg Heckstall and Marrow each hit a pair of free throws in the final 28 seconds to ice the win.
Marrow joined Stanley in double figures with 23 ponts and six assists, while Warren was 7-of-8 from the floor for 18 points and 11 rebounds. Hampton hit 31-of-57 from the floor (54.4%) and out-rebounded Winthrop 38-33.
The Pirates now return to Boiling Springs, N.C. to finish the Jan. 20 contest with Gardner-Webb at 7 pm on Monday night.
