HAMPTON, Va. -- Sophomore
Nylah Young scored 20 points to lead three in double figures on Saturday as a fourth quarter rally fell short as visiting USC Upstate defeated Hampton 64-59.
In the decisive fourth, the Spartans held a 51-39 lead after a Michaela Gibbons 3-pointer at the 7:23 mark. Hampton chipped away cutting the lead to two on a pair of
Alyssa Sweeney free throws with 28 seconds left at 57-55. A
Victoria Davis jumper with 13 seconds left got Hampton to a point at 60-59, but Jada Logan and Gibbons each hit a pair of free throws to ice the win.
Neither team held more than a four-point lead in the first half. Young started the scoring with a pair of 3-pointers as Hampton held a 6-2 lead at the 6:22 mark. A
Victoria Davis jumper with 35 seconds left in the quarter put Hampton back up 14-10, but a Molly Coleman trimmed the lead to 14-12 after one.
In the second, a pair of Michaela Gibbons free throws put the guests up 23-22 with just under four minutes remaining, but Hampton scored the last five points as a Young layup with 21 seconds left gave the hosts a 27-23 halftime advantage.
USC Upstate exploded in the third outscoring Hampton 25-9, the brunt of that coming in a 23-5 run over a seven-minute spa as a Denijsha Wilson layup with 56 seconds left put them ahead 48-34.
Tia Montagne and Davis joined Young in double figures with 10 points each. Davis added seven assists, six rebounds and four steals for Hampton (2-6, 2-4). The Lady Pirates are back at home on Friday hosting Winthrop at 5 pm.
