RADFORD, Va. – Senior
Davion Warren scored 23 points to lead three in double figures on Tuesday night as Hampton was swept in its two-game series at Radford falling 76-65.
After trading buckets to start the game, Hampton went on an 18-4 run over a 5:45 span to take a 22-9 lead on a Russell Dean jumper with 10:20 left.Â
The Pirates still held a 27-17 lead with 6:30 left on a Warren jumper, but over the next 65 seconds the Highlanders ripped off nine straight points as a 3-pointer by Xavier Lipscomb pulled the hosts to 27-26 at the 5:25 mark. A Josiah Jeffers jumper with 4:43 left capped an 11-0 run to give Radford a 28-27 lead.
Dean put Hampton ahead 33-32 with 94 seconds remaining in the half on a jumper, as Radford responded by scoring field goals by Lewis Djonkam and Fah'Mir Ali to lead 36-33 at half.
In the second half, the Highlanders jumped out to a 49-42 lead on a Lipscomb 3-pointer with 12:44 on the clock. Hampton trimmed that to one quickly on the heels of a four-point play by
Chris Shelton and a steal and dunk by Warren to trail 49-48 just 43 seconds later. That was as close as Hampton got.
Dean added 17 points, while
Marquis Godwin chipped in with 10 for Hampton (4-7, 3-3) who will now host UNC Asheville in a two-game series starting on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.
