HAMPTON, Va. -- If you were a fan of offense, the first Battle of the Bay in four years was for you.
A Juwan Carter one-yard plunge in the first overtime was the final margin as Norfolk State defeated Hampton 47-44 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
In a contest that saw 1,005 combined yards and the highest combined Battle of the Bay score in series history, Hampton jumped out quickly with a 26-yard field goal from
Axel Perez and a one-yard
Jett Duffey to
KeyRon Catlett pass for a 10-0 lead with 7:22 left in the opening quarter.
Norfolk State got on the board early in the second quarter as Carter scored on a 15-yard run to trim the lead to 10-7. Hampton answered with an eight-play, 75-yard drive capped by a Duffey to
Romon Copeland 31-yard scoring strike to regain a ten-point advantage at 17-7.Â
The Pirates forced a field goal from the Spartans on their next possession as Josh Nardone hit a 27-yarder to bring the Pirate lead to 17-10. After a turnover, Norfolk State used a J.J. Davis eight-yard run to tie the game at 17 with 3:52 left.
Hampton answered quickly as Duffey ran for 18 yards on the next possession and then found
Jadakis Bonds with a 49-yard scoring strike to put Hampton back up 24-17 just 42 seconds later.
Hampton's special teams got into play as
David Olla deflected a punt that gave the Pirates possession on the NSU 38 with 2:17 left. Perez hit his second field goal of the game, this time from 35 yards with 12 seconds left as Hampton took a 27-17 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw only two touchdowns, both by the guests and Carter had a hand in each with an six-yard pass to Marcque Ellington and then an 18-yard run to put Norfolk State up 31-27 with 1:58 left.
In the fourth, both teams dialed up the offensive heat as
Elijah Burris scored on a five-yard run to put Hampton back up 34-31 with 12:18 left. Norfolk State answered 10 seconds later on a 70-yard Carter to Justin Smith scoring pass to regain the advantage at 38-34.
Hampton's defense forced a 20-yard field goal from Nardone with three stops at the two-yardline which put Norfolk State up 41-34 with 8:14 remaining. The Pirates gained one last shot after a 48-yard field goal attempt was missed with 1:41 left. Hampton went 70 yards in eight plays as Duffey found Bonds with a 17-yard scoring pass to tie the game at 41.
In overtime, Hampton was held to a 28-yard Perez field goal, but Norfolk used a 22-yard Carter to Justin Smith pass to get down to the three. A two-yard run set up Carter for the game winning score.
Duffey threw for 370 yards and four touchdowns, while Burris topped the running game with 65 yards and a touchdown. Catlett had seven receptions for 62 yards, while Bonds caught six passes for a career-best 155 yards and two touchdowns.
Hampton returns to Armstrong Stadium on October 9 hosting Kennesaw State at 2 pm.
