ASHEVILLE, N.C. - -The Hampton University volleyball team roared back from losing the first two sets to force a fifth, but fell to the host Bulldogs 26-24, 25-23, 15-25, 26-28, 15-9 on Friday night.
Gabby Calloway had a double-double of 15 kills and 19 digs, while
Nevena Santrac and
Margaret Daramola each recorded season-highs of 10 kills apiece for Hampton.
After dropping the first two sets in tight contests, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third and saw the hosts trim it to 9-8 before Hampton regained the advantage at 15-11 on a Daramola kill. UNC Asheville scored the next point, but Hampton scored the next seven to lead 22-12 after a
Julieta Campana kill as they won the third 25-15.
The fourth saw Hampton sprint out to an 8-4 lead after an
Isis Black kill, but UNC Asheville responded with a 12-4 run to lead 16-12 after an attack error by Hampton. The score was tied six times down the stretch as a kill by
Isis Black forced the final tie at 26-all. An attack error and then an ace by Santrac gave Hampton the fourth set 28-26.
In the deciding fifth set, Hampton scored the first two points but the hosts ran off the next seven and kept the Lady Pirates at bay for the win. Hampton closes out its road schedule on Saturday at USC Upstate.
