SECOND HALF BURST LEADS MEN'S BASKETBALL OVER PANTHERS

HAMPTON, Va. – In a game with each team pulling off a big run, Hampton's 21-4 explosion took control of the second half and guided the Pirates to a 76-71 win over High Point on Monday afternoon.

Davion Warren had scored five straight for Hampton to even the game at 22 with 8:06 on the clock as High Point then took control of the first half on the heels of a 14-2 run over a nearly five-minute span as Lydell Elmore dunked the Panthers into a 36-24 lead with 3:12 left.

In the second half, High Point used a quick 8-0 flurry to take its largest lead at 52-36 on a layup by Alex Holt with 15:21 left.  Layups from Warren and Russell Dean got Hampton started as a pair of Elijah Seward 3-pointers capped a 21-4 run over a seven-minute span of the second half to help put the Pirates ahead 57-56 with 8:14 left.

After trading leads for a few minutes, Hampton used a 10-2 spurt finished off by a Chris Shelton 3-pointer to give Hampton its largest lead at 72-64 with 2:39 left.

Warren topped all scorers with 28 points, while Marquis Godwin matched his career high with 20 points.  Dean and Shelton each just missed double figures with nine points.  Dajour Dickens was the leading rebounder in the game with 10 and added seven blocked shots.

Hampton found its stroke from the field in the second half hitting 65.4% from the floor (17-of-26) and holding High Point to 11-of-39 from the field (28.2%).   Hampton (8-9, 7-5) returns to action on Thursday night hosting Presbyterian to start a two-game set at 6 pm.
