CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Gabby Calloway had 14 kills and 11 digs,
Madison Clark had 13 kills and four blocks, while
Clara Smith had 11 kills and seven blocks as Hampton fell in five sets on Saturday to Charleston Southern 20-25, 25-17, 29-27, 22-25, 9-15.
After dropping the first set, Hampton got on a run in the second jumping out to a 9-4 lead after a kill by
Margaret Daramola. The hosts trimmed the deficit to 18-16 late in the set, but Hampton closed it out with a 7-1 run to take a 25-17 win.
Set three saw the Buccaneers hold an advantage for most of the set and had three set points, but Hampton fought off each one and scored the last two points to take a wild 29-27 third set. In the fourth, Charleston Southern closed it out scoring the last six points after Hampton held a 22-19 lead late to force the deciding fifth set.
Daramola added six kills and a team best nine blocks, while
Julieta Campana had 26 assists and
Brooklyn Irvin had 23.
Jessica Pugh topped the team with 27 digs, while
Leanna Caldwell had 12.
Hampton now returns home to face USC Upstate at 6 pm inside Holland Hall.
