HAMPTON, Va. -- Starting the season off strong, Hampton University women's basketball team stormed past the Mid-Atlantic Christian University Mustangs in a 110-26 blowout, Monday evening inside Hampton's Convocation Center.
Getting into the groove, Hampton started the game off with intention-of-dominating the court, gaining the first shot through Nylah Young (Suffolk, VA.). With the Mustangs keeping up the momentum, Hampton took the lead with back to back layups from Camryn Hill (Dallas, TX) and Young. Following, Hamptons defense kept the ball in their possession with continuous steals from Victoria Mason, seamlessly bringing the score up to 18-6 with 4:13 minutes left in the period.
With Hampton switching up their lineup in the second period, the Lady Pirates showed that every player was an asset. Substituting in Madison Buford (St. Louis, MO.) and Amayah Reaves (Chandler, Ariz.), the team managed a 47-point lead by the end-of-the period.
Hampton saw their lead continuing to grow and used the momentum to soar through the third period. By the time the fourth period came around, the lady pirates were at 93-10. Continuing to work on their craft, Hampton dominated in layups and jumpers, with Cheyeene Talbot (Mount Vernon, NY) settling the 110-26 final.
Young led all scorers with 24 points (9-of-13 FG, 6-of-12 FT) to go with nine rebounds and three blocks. Victoria Mason (Chandler, AZ) followed with 21 points (10-of-13 FG, 1-of-4 3PFG), two rebounds and lead with four turnovers, while Laren VanArsdale (Powder Springs, GA) dished out  a game-high-of-nine assists.
Jermany Mapp (Chester, SC) finished with 14 points (7-of-11 FG), nine rebounds, while Camryn Hill (Dallas, TX) followed with 10 points ( 5-of-9 FG, 0-of-2 3P), eight rebounds and two assists.
Hampton shot 52.7 percent (49-of-93) from the field, 20.0 percent ( 5-of-25 ) from beyond the arc and 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from the free-throw line. Mid-Atlantic connected on 31.4 percent (11-of-35) from the field, 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from the arc and 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from the free throw line. Although Hampton held the rebound margin advantage (51-24), Mid-Atlantic scored four second-chance points off-of-three offensive rebounds and both teams had an equal amount-of-blocks (2-2). Hampton outplayed Mid-Atlantic in assists (30-5), steals (32-5), and fast break points (30-0) , while scoring 61 points off turnovers and staying in the lead with 32 bench points.

The Lady Pirates will return to campus this Saturday, Nov. 12, to host the Delaware State Hornets in a double header showdown inside Hampton's convocation center. Opening tip is at 5:30 p.m.
