HAMPTON, Va. --
Dlayla Chakolis scored 13 points and
Victoria Mason added eight to help the Hampton Lady Pirates take home a 38-34 win over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates are 3-2 in conference play and 6-9 overall and showed everyone their capabilities on the court during this game.
Although a close game, Hampton had an advantage with offensive rebounds at a 15-13 edge. During the first half both teams struggled to put points on the board as Hampton held a 13-11 halftime lead.
However, as soon as the second half hit, the momentum kicked up and both teams went toe-to-toe to take home this win. With Hampton in the lead in the first half, the Seahawks came in hot third quarter, holding the field goal percentage lead of 45.5%, in comparison to Hampton's 27.3%.
In spite of that, Hampton continued to hold their own as the game dwindled down, making more layups and tapping into those three-point shots. With the score 33-32, with only 2:34 on the clock, the Lady Pirates picked up momentum to keep their advantage. After a jumper from Mason and a free throw from
Amyah Reaves, Hampton kept a two-point lead.
Nonetheless, what sealed the deal was during the last two seconds of the game, the Seahawks had possession, but it was turned over from Carri Gross when Chakolis stole the ball and secured a layup for the win.
Amyah Reaves led in steals with six and shared the rebounding lead with
Ariana Wilkes with seven.
Up next, Hampton will take on William & Mary in Williamsburg, next Thursday at 7p.m.
