Pirates Fall 75-68 to Norfolk State in Battle of the Bay

NORFOLK, Va. (Nov. 13, 2023) … Hampton University men's basketball fell to Spartans of Norfolk State 75-68. The Pirates would trail by 15 points halfway through the second half. With Hampton making a late surge, HU was able to cut NSU's advantage down to three with 2:15 remaining. However, Norfolk State took advantage of a pair of late turnovers made by the Pirates to pull away late.

How it Happened

The Pirates were quick to on the board scoring in the first nine seconds with a dunk by Tedrick Wilcox Jr. In the opening minutes of the half, Hampton's offense would be held quiet. However, with the Pirates keeping the rebounding battle close, HU kept it within striking distance. The contest proved to be physical with 13 fouls in the opening ten minutes. While the Pirates were not hitting their free throws, they only trailed by five at the under-eight media timeout.

Coming out of the timeout Norfolk State's press started to cause problems for HU. In the first half alone the Pirates had 19 turnovers. The Spartans were able to produce 19 points from turnovers. NSU closed out the final minutes of the first half on an 11-3 run taking a 12-point advantage with less than a minute remaining. Hampton's Dan Banister Jr. would hit a three before time expired making it 41-32. Banister Jr. would be one of four pirates that finished the contest with double-figures

Early on in the second half, Hampton still kept the Spartan's advantage within double-digits. A pair of free throws by Banister Jr. sparked a 6-0 run making it 46-38. The Spartans with 13 minutes to go, jumped out to their largest lead of the night. With HU's offense going cold NSU was able to answer the Pirate's run.

Transfer Ford Copper had a solid second half scoring 14 points. With seven consecutive points, Copper sparked a 13-2 run making it a four-point contest. The Charlotte, N.C. native, finished the game with 16 points while shooting an efficient 5-8 from the field. Just as both sides did in the first half, NSU and Hampton continued to trade blows.

With 2:15 remaining, Cooper hit a pullup three shrinking the Spartans advantage down to one possession. Norfolk State down the stretch scored eight of the contest's final 12 points pulling away late.

Hampton's Kyrese Mullen had his second double-double of the season scoring a team-high 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. While HU committed 19 turnovers, they would keep the rebounding margin close. The Pirates also shot 77% from the free-throw line in the second half.

What's Next

The Pirates return to action on Friday at 6:45 PM in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. Hampton's first-round opponent will be Kent State who made the NCAA Tournament last season.
