North Carolina Defeats Lady Pirates, 62-32

Box Score CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Nov. 15, 2023) --- Following a Hampton (0-2) basket by Aisha Dabo to open the game's scoring, North Carolina (3-0) reeled off six straight points to take the lead for good. The Tar Heels would go on to post a 62-32 victory over the Lady Pirates before 3,144 fans at Carmichael Arena.

Dabo was Hampton's leading scorer with seven. Dabo and Le'Asia Foreman had five rebounds each. North Carolina's Deja Kelly was the game's leading scorer with 12 followed by teammates Paulina Paris (11) and Maria Gakdeng (10). Gakdeng had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Tar Heels built a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. North Carolina reeled off 11 straight points to start the second quarter and led 32-13 at intermission. The Tar Heel's stifling defense forced 19 first half Hampton turnovers, leading to 18 North Carolina points, and the Lady Pirates were called for 13 first half fouls. North Carolina had six turnovers and six fouls in the first half of play. Hampton's two top scorers, Camryn Hill and Amyah Reaves were held scoreless in the first quarter and had a combined five of the teams 13 points at halftime.

Hampton's offensive struggles continued in the second half as North Carolina went on a 14-2 run to lead 46-15 with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter.
For the game, the Lady Pirates were out rebounded the Tar Heels 34-33 but gave up 29 turnovers to North Carolina's nine.

With some local 1,500 elementary school students on hand for Field Trip Day, the Carmichael Arena crowd was loud and enthusiastic. With busloads of students lining up to drop off children at Carmichael Arena before the game, Hampton coach David Six was forced to get off the team bus to help direct traffic so the Hampton team could get to the arena in time for the game.

Six years ago, Hampton stunned North Carolina in Chapel Hill by posting a 70-66 victory over the NCAA Tournament-bound Tar Heels. In that game, the Lady Pirates outscored the Tar Heels, 18-7 in the final 6:29 to pull the upset.

The Lady Pirates return to action on Sunday, Nov. 19 host Norfolk State at 2:00 p.m.in Hampton's home opener.
