Elon Stops Hampton, 51-14, in Football Season Finale

ELON, N.C. (Nov. 18, 2023) … Hampton (5-6, 3-5) ended the 2023 campaign with a 51-14 loss at Elon (6-5, 6-2) at Rhodes Stadium. The Phoenix won three of its final four games while Hampton increased its win total from last year from four to five and the number of conference victories from one to three.

Elon scored on two long touchdown passes to stake the Phoenix to a quick 14-0 lead midway through the opening quarter. After returning the opening kickoff 57 yards, Matthew Downing connected with Jamarien Dalton for a 33-yard score 19 seconds into the game and with Chandler Brayboy for a 60-yard touchdown with 8:38 left in the opening quarter.

Hampton responded with a 43-yard scoring pass from Chris Zellous to Paul Woods to cap an 86-yard, 10-play drive tighten the score to 14-7 at the end of the first half.

Elon dominated the second quarter, scoring 30 straight points. It began with a third long pass, this one a 33-yard scoring pass from Downing to Christian DaSilva widened Elon's lead to 21-7 with 12:17 left in the half. On Hampton's next possession, Elon's Bo Sanders intercepted a pass and rambled 34 yards for a touchdown making the score 27-7. On the very next offensive play, Marco Patlerno scooped up a Hampton fumble and dashed 23 yards to make the score 34-7. A 39-yard field goal by Jack Berkowitz increased Elon's lead to 37-7. Downing tossed his fourth touchdown of the first half when he connected with John Carlos Miller II on a 53-yard strike to make it, 44-7, at intermission.

Hampton struck first in the second half. Zellous ran it in from two-yards out and Csehoski converted the extra point making the score, 44-14, with 11:32 to go in the third quarter. A redshirt freshman, Csehoski converted all 19 of his extra point attempts and was a perfect 6-6 on field goals in 2023.

Elon closed out the game's scoring when Wayne Dixie broke loose for a 27-yard jaunt for Elon's seventh touchdown of the day, first on the ground, with 10:38 left in the game. In all, seven different players scored for the Phoenix.
