HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 3, 2023) … In a game that was scheduled just three days earlier, Hampton (3-5) whipped Virginia-Lynchburg (0-11), 121-66, at the Convocation Center. It marked the most points scored by the Pirates in the Division I-era dating back to 1986. It also represents the third-most points scored by a Hampton team and the most points in Hampton's Division I-era beginning in 1986. On Nov. 22, 1980, the Pirates outscored Virginia State, 130-55, the most points ever scored by a Pirate team.
Tristan Maxwell recorded a triple-double for the Pirates with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. No Hampton player has registered a triple-double dating back to at least 2010.
All 11 Hampton players who saw action in the game scored. Seven players scoring double-digits for the Pirates including Maxwell,
Jerry Deng (19),
Tedrick Wilcox Jr. (16),
Ja'Von Benson (12),
Amir Nesbitt (11), and
Donovan Raymond (10).
After falling behind 2-0 in the game's opening minute on a Zachary Dunn basket. The Dragons lead grew to three, 5-2, on a three-pointer by Demarris Day. The Pirates took their first lead, 6-5, on a Deng free throw. The lead grew to 20, 45-25, with 5:36 to go in the half when Wilcox Jr. converted a pair of free throws. Hampton passed the half-century mark with 2:41 to go in the half with two free throws by Maxwell to go ahead 51-32. Hampton led, 53-37, at intermission.
Eight players scored for the Pirates in the first half led by Deng and Maxwell, who tallied 12 points each. Wilcox Jr. had eight points and
Amir Nesbitt scored seven in the opening half of play. Hampton dominated the boards in the opening 20 minutes, 27-15. Maxwell and
Ja'Von Benson had five rebounds each in the opening half.
Jahmir Brown scored 16 first-half points for the Dragons to lead all scorers. Brown was also the game-high scorer, finishing with 24 points.
A 9-2 run by the Pirates to open the second half boosted Hampton's lead to 62-39 with 16:59 left. The Hampton lead grew to 31, 79-48, on a trey by
Amir Nesbitt with 12:27 left. Hampton continued to pull ahead and led, 90-54, midway through the second half. With 7:54 to go, the Pirates lead increased to 41, 97-56.
Hampton reached the 100-point plateau on a stickback by Raymond with 7:11 to go to lead 100-59.
A three-pointer by
Tyler Chatman with 3:20 to go gave the Pirates a 50-point advantage, 111-61, the most points scored by Hampton this season.
The game with Virginia-Lynchburg was an eleventh-hour addition to the Pirate's schedule. Hampton was slated to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 1 in Princess Anne, Md., but the game was canceled due to a health issue at the Princess Anne, Md. campus.
