Hampton Women’s Soccer Drop Home Match to South Carolina Upstate

Hampton, Va. (August 20, 2023)… Hampton University women's soccer closed out their two-game home stretch with a 3-0 loss to South Carolina Upstate. While the possession battle would be close, the Lady Pirates controlled the ball mainly in their own half.

How it Happened

HU withstood the Spartans' advances early in the contest and controlled most of the possession. Neither side could create much offense with both teams only combining for five shots through the first 35 minutes. Hampton's lone chance during this stretch came from Keri Geter. With South Carolina's defenders staying back, Geter fired from outside the penalty box just missing the goal.

With five minutes remaining, the Spartans were able to find the back of the net. USCU's Hannah Blodget delivered the first blow with Kennedy Jackson setting her up. The Lady Pirates continued to face pressure, but Alexis Deveaux continued to produce saves.

Coming out of the half South Carolina State expanded their lead with two goals in a span of two minutes. After the Spartans lead extended, Hampton was able to start producing more shots. Within the final 30 minutes, the Lay Pirates tripled their first-half total. Freshman Destiny Dixon and Sanaa Perry created two strong chances within a span of three minutes. However, Dixon's shot just missed grazing the crossbar and Perry's would be corralled by USCU's keeper.

The physicality of the match picked up in the final five minutes. Both squads ended up picking yellow cards before the final whistle. Freshman Celeah Archie would make her first collegiate appearance after being subbed in for the final stretch.

What's Next

Hampton women's soccer begins a six-game stretch on the road. The Lady Pirates will be back in action this Thursday taking on Howard at 7:00 PM.
