HU Women’s Soccer Begin Six Game Road Trip

Hampton, Va. (August 22, 2023)... After starting the 2023 season at home, the Lady Pirates begin a six-game road trip. Hampton starts the slate of away matches against rivals Howard on Thursday at 7:00 PM. HU will then head north on Saturday to take on the Peacocks of Saint Peter's at 12:00 PM.

A Look at Your Lady Pirates

Through the early stretch of the 2023 campaign, Alexis Deveaux has continued to be one of the top goalkeepers in the CAA. In just two contests she has made conference high 21 saves and sits third in the country. Deveaux also sits top five in the nation for saves per game averaging just shy of 11 per match. Sophomore Makayla Wade anchors the back line along with being a key distributor off of set pieces. The Lady Pirates youth has seen an ample amount of minutes with six freshmen on average in the starting lineup.

At stake for Hampton is a chance to secure their first win over Howard. The two squads have only met twice with the last meeting happening in 2021. In the last five seasons, HU has squared off against Saint Peter's three times winning once. The Lady Pirates' 3-0 win during the 2018 season secured the program's first-ever win against an NCAA Division I opponent. While the Peacocks have won the last two matchups, both were close contests being only decided by a goal.

A Look at Howard

The Bison enter Thursday night's match with a (0-1-1) record already facing two CAA opponents in Elon and Towson. Under coach Brent Leiba, Howard has claimed multiple SWAC regular season and tournament titles. Throughout his tenure with the program, the Bison have won ten or more matches in a season on five separate occasions.

Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Knox is off to a strong start making the third most saves in the NEC. Currently, Knox leads the entire country for minutes played by goalies. The Bison's early goal production has come from Marli Berry and Melea Earley. Both were able to find the back of the net in their home opener. The duo of Berry and Early have ranked Howard as one of the NEC's top offenses.

A Look at Saint Peter's

Through the early portion of the 2023 campaign, SPU has gone (0-2) losing to LIU and NJIT. The Peacocks last season were only able to secure one none conference win. Coach Julia Bazi enters her fourth season with Saint Peter's. Under Bazi SPU's win total has increased every season.

While the Peacocks are a young squad they return five key sophomores. From the returning freshman, Alyssa Hackett and Taylor Moyer led Saint Peters in minutes played last season. SPU also returns their top two goal scores from last year in Gianna Grassifulli and Lula Mansilla Medina. Grassifulli's two goals would be game-winners against Iona and Siena.
