Hampton Women's Soccer Suffer a Close Defeat to Mount St. Mary's.

Emmitsburg, Md. (Sept. 1, 2023) … Hampton Women's Soccer fell in a close match to Mount St. Mary's 2-1. The Lady Pirates would strike early in the match, but two quick goals by the Mountaineers gave them the advantage.

How it Happened

From the jump, both sides offenses struggled to get anything going. In the first thirty minutes, there were only three shots taken. Evan-Nicole Whitaker's chance would be the first of the match and on target. However, Mount St. Mary's keeper would make the save keeping it even at 0-0.

Hampton in the 36th minute of the match, found the back of the net. The Lady Pirates methodically built their attack from a free kick in their back half. Senior Maya Martir found Sanaa Perry in front of the net for her second goal of the season. Martir's assist would be her first of the 2023 campaign and fourth of her collegiate career.

Within the final five minutes of the half, Saint Mary's offense started to challenge HU's back line. The Lady Pirates answered the call with Alexis Deveaux making the save. A foul committed in the penalty box by Hampton gave the Mountaineers a penalty shot. Taylor Carter would take the penalty for Mount Saint Mary's and scored to tie up the match with five seconds remaining in the first 45.

Coming out of the half both squads jockeyed for the advantage knowing that one goal could change the match. The Mountaineer's strong offensive play from the first half continued. Mount St. Mary's would take the first five shots of the second half.  During the 59th minute, MSMU forced a one-on-one with HU's keeper on a through ball. The Mountaineers found the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-1.

While Hampton produced four shots in the final thirty minutes, only one attempt would be on goal. HU's Leah Johnson during this stretch picked up her second yellow card of the season. The Lady Pirates did hold Mount St. Mary's to season season-low 11 shots on goal.
