Lady Pirates Start Conference Play With a Loss to Charleston

Charleston, S.C. (Sept. 7, 2023) … Hampton women's soccer began CAA play this evening facing the Cougars of Charleston. The Lady Pirates trailed early on and could not dig into Charleston's advantage.

How it Happened

Taking advantage of a miscue made by HU, Charleston found the back of the net early making it 1-0. Heading into the match one of the Cougar's top goal scorers from last season Olivia Freitas, had yet to produce a goal in the 2023 campaign. She scored early in the opening minutes giving CofC control of the match.  Before the 15-minute mark of the contest, Charleston struck two more times.

While the Lady Pirates would be held to two shots in the first half, both strong chances there on goal. Lailah Daniel produced the first shot for HU by breaking free from the Cougar's back line. The shot was tracking towards the goal but CofC's keeper would make the save. Later on in the first 45 minutes of the match, Mattie Edozie attempted to Charleston's keeper from deep. Edozie's shot headed toward the bottom left corner of the goal. However, the Cougars goalie made the save.

Coming out of the half Charleston continued to control possession. With the Lady Pirates losing the possession battle, they would be held to just two shots in the half. The Cougars offense continued to find the back of the net. Before the final whistle blew, Charleston scored seven more times Freshman Destiny Dixon in the 76th minute would score the first goal of her collegiate career.
