Lady Pirates Defeat Hofstra in CAA Action

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 28, 2024) … In a battle of the two Coastal Athletic Association's HUs, Hampton University (2-15, 2-5) outlasted Hofstra University (7-11, 1-6), 67-62, before 872 fans at the Hampton Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates led throughout most of the game before a furious late-minute Hofstra rally closed the gap. With Hampton leading by 18 points with 4:33 left in the game, Hofstra mounted a furious comeback and closed the gap to four in the game's final minute.

Back-to-back-to-back three-pointers by Hofstra narrowed the Hampton lead but the Lady Pirates converted free throws in the final seconds to ensure their second win of the season. Hofstra lost its sixth consecutive game.

Camryn Hill led the way for the Lady Pirates with 17 points including key free throws down the stretch. Cheyenne Talbot added 15 points and Amyah Reaves scored 10. Le'Asia Foreman scored seven points and had seven steals in the contest.

Hampton's swarming defense forced a season-high 33 Hofstra turnovers, turning them into 35 points, more than half the team's scoring.

Hampton scored the game's first six points and the Lady Pirates led by as many as seven in the first quarter. Cheyenne Talbot scored seven of Hampton's first 13 points and Tyra Kennedy canned a three-pointer at the end of the quarter to stake the Lady Pirates to an 18-14 lead. Emma Von Essen kept Hofstra close by scoring eight points.

Hofstra came out fast by scoring the first six points of the second quarter to take a 20-18 lead on Von Essen's basket. But field goals by Hill, back-to-back buckets by Reaves and one by Janae Dublin put the Lady Pirates back on top. Hampton went to the locker room with a 34-27 lead.

After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Hill exploded for 10 second quarter points matching Hofstra's Von Essen for halftime scoring honors. The opportunistic Lady Pirates forced 16 first half turnovers turning them into 17 points. Hampton was also dominant on the inside, outscoring Hofstra, 14-6, in the paint.

In an up-tempo third quarter, Hampton's harassing defense forced seven more Hofstra turnovers. Talbot tallied five points in the quarter including a lay-up that gave the Pirates a 48-36 lead with 3:11 left. Hampton limited Hofstra to just 36.4 percent shooting and outscored the Pride 15-14 to lead 49-41 after three quarters.

Hofstra's first nine possessions of the fourth quarter resulted in two free throws, two missed shots and seven turnovers. A 12-2 run by the Lady Pirates upped the lead to 61-43.

But with Hampton leading 62-46, Hofstra went on a 12-1 to close to 63-58 with under a minute to play. Hill canned a free throw with 41 seconds left to give Hampton a little breathing room but a Hofstra basket with 24.7 seconds made it 64-60. Hill's two free throws were offset by a pair of Hofstra free throws with 24.2 seconds left. A Talbot free throw in the closing seconds and tough inside defense iced Hampton's second victory of the season.

The Lady Pirates return to action with a two-game road swing playing at Charleston on Friday, Feb. 2 and then at UNCW on Sunday Feb. 4.
