Pirates End Road Trip With a Loss to Delaware

NEWARK, Del. (Jan. 4th, 2023) … Hampton University men's basketball team ended their four-game road trip with an 80-53 loss to Delaware. While the Pirates would trail by 20 in the first half, HU found a way to make it a 10-point contest in the second half. The Blue Hens throughout the night took advantage of Hampton's poor shooting.

Kyrese Mullen got the Pirates on the board scoring the contest's first basket. With Hampton committing three turnovers in the first few minutes, Delaware answered Mullen's bucket with a 7-0 run. HU's offense started out cold going 1-5 from the field. The Norfolk, Va. native ended Hampton's three-minute scoreless stretch. Heading into the first media timeout the Pirates trailed 13-4.

Coming out of the first media timeout UD's Niels Lane caught fire. In the first eight minutes, the senior guard produced 11 points. Lane finished the contest with a season-high 15 points While HU started to hit shots from the field they still could not find their rhythm from beyond the arc. After the under 12 stoppage, Trey Thomas ended the Pirate's drought with a three from the top of the arc. In the first half alone Thomas had 10 points.

Towards the end of the half, the Pirates went on a 7-0 run to shrink the Blue Hen's commanding advantage. With Hampton going 2-13 from the field three in the first half, Delaware continued to build upon its lead. However, Coach Joyner Jr.'s squad closed out the half strong making it 41-25.

The Pirates came out of halftime firing on all cylinders going on an 8-0 run. The Pirates were able to create chances by forcing turnovers. Trey Thomas continued where he left off hitting his first three from beyond the arc. Tristan Maxwell also was a key contributor during this stretch.  Maxwell would finish the contest with 14 points. Before the first media timeout, the HU cut the Blue Hens advantage down to 10.

Hampton's cold shooting continued to haunt them throughout the remainder of the contest. The Pirates would experience six minutes without a field goal. Delaware was able to regain control of the contest leading 64-37 with less than eight minutes remaining. With HU shooting a season-low 31 percent from the field, the Blue Hens advantage continued to grow.

The Pirates return back to the convocation center this Saturday facing Campbell. Saturday afternoon's contest is set to begin at 2:00 PM.
