Hampton Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Match at Home to Norfolk State, 3-1

HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 16, 2024) … The Lady Pirates hosted non-conference foe Norfolk State and fell 3-1. The Spartans won the first set 25-14. Hampton tied it up by taking the second stanza but Norfolk State took the third and fourth frames to win the match. 

During the beginning of the match, both teams struggled to build an advantage. While the Spartans had the lead 7-5, Shachia Lamb brought it back to within a point. With Maria Clara De Andrade and Brooklyn Patterson recording kills Hampton kept the set within striking distance. Norfolk State jumped out to a six-point advantage at the 16-10 mark. Hampton started to mount a comeback using two errors by NSU to swing the momentum back in their favor. The Spartans produced three consecutive aces to spark a 5-0 run helping to take the first frame.

Coach Ronaldo Pacheco's trailed 12-4 early on in the match. Throughout the set, Hampton battled to tie the frame at 22-22. The Lady Pirates recorded nine kills and the second stanza and took advantage of 10 errors made by the Spartans. Madison Clark put Hampton in the lead late 24-23 propelling HU to take the set 25-23.

Hampton and Norfolk State continued to trade blows in the third frame. With the Spartans scoring 12 consecutive points, the Lady Pirates were trailing 19-8. Patterson and Ada Bulger produced kills late for Coach Pacheco's side. NSU was able to score the final points of the set with a kill by Gabrielle Gilbert. 

Norfolk State jumped out to a quick five-point advantage early on in the set. The Lady Pirates throughout the frame kept it within striking distance. Kylah Hunter's defensive efforts carried on rallies for Hampton. The Mesquite, Texas native, finished the match with a season-high 17 digs. Norfolk State continued to hold onto its early lead until late in the set. At the 20-13 mark, the Spartans started to pull away taking the match. 

The Lady Pirates resume conference play on Oct. 19 against the Towson Tigers. Saturday's match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
