Lady Pirates Continue Conference Play at Powhatan Field Against UNCW

HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 2, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer returns home to Powhatan Field facing conference foe UNCW. Thursday's match is slated to begin at noon and will be streamed on FloSports. 

Prior to joining the Coastal Athletic Association, Hampton had never faced the Seahawks. In the series short history, UNCW leads 2-0. The previous meeting was on the road and Hampton lost to UNCW.

Last time out, the Lady Pirates fell to Elon at Rudd Feild on Sept. 29, 6-0. Patricia Wharton made her first start in goal for the Lady Pirates. The Smyrna, Ga. native recorded five saves in the previous match. Ellen Van Caenegem recorded a team-high two shots. 

So far this season, Hampton has scored the seventh most goals in the conference (17). Over 40 percent of the Lady Pirates' goals have been scored by Sanaa Perry and Vane Caenegem. The duo has found the back of the net seven times during the 2024 campaign. HU is averaging 5.17 saves per match which is the most in the CAA.

The Seahawks are coached by Chris Neal who is in his seventh season with the program. Coach Neal has been a staple in the conference coaching in the CAA for 17 seasons. Through the first conference matches, UNCW has posted a record of 1-1-2 and is 3-6-3 overall. In its last time out, the Seahawks defeated Drexel 3-1. Emily Bowbliss, Lexi Vegoda, and Kayla Burroughs all scored in the UNCW victory. 

So far this season the Seahawks rank at the top of the conference for shot accuracy. On average 51.5 percent of UNCW's shots taken are on goal which is 40th in the country. Lexi Vegoda is the Seahawk's top offensive threat this season scoring two goals and tallying five assists. Vegoda's five assists are the third most in the CAA and 35th at the Division I level. Morgan Hobbs has been the Seahawk's go-to goalkeeper. Hobbs in 12 matches, is second in the conference for saves with 43.
