Hampton Volleyball Drop First Match Against William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Nov. 15, 2024) … The Lady Pirates opened the series against the Tribe of William & Mary 3-0. While the tribe took the first set, both teams battled in the second frame. Hampton trailed the Tribe by as many as six points. The Lady Pirates battled to bring it back to within a point but William & Mary ended the stanza on a run to take the set. With the momentum gained the Tribe went on to take the deciding set.

While the Lady Pirates dropped the first point of the match, Hampton battled to take the lead at the 5-4 mark. Hampton was able to take advantage of errors committed by the Tribe. A 5-1 run by William & Mary tipped the scales back in favor of the Tribe. The Tribe took their largest lead of the set after another dominant stretch to go up by 10.  While a kill by Abena Asomani-Martin helped end the run, William & Mary took the first frame 25-16.

In the second set, both teams traded blows with the stanza being tied on eight separate occasions. After the 10-10 mark the Tribe started to take control of the frame producing a 7-1 run. Maddie Meyers tallied four kills during the stretch for the Tribe. Coach Ronaldo Pacheco's squad brought the frame back to within striking distance with Kylah Hunter and Brooklyn Patterson producing kills for the Lady Pirates. William & Mary scored three consecutive points to take the stanza 25-19.

The Lady Pirates kept the third frame close early on. After a service error by the Tribe, Hampton cut William & Mary's advantage down to one 6-5. With the Tribe taking five consecutive points, William & Mary started to build upon its advantage. While the Lady Pirates stopped the initial run, another strong run of form by the Tribe put them up by 10 at the 21-11 mark. Asomani-Martin recorded her fourth kill of the match but William & Mary took the deciding set 25-13.

Hampton returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 17 against William & Mary. Sunday's match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
