Pirates Defeat UMBC 78-68 Inside the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 19, 2024) … The Hampton University men's basketball secured its second win of the season defeating America East foe UMBC 78-68. This marks the Pirate's first win over the Retrievers in program history. HU had one of their best shooting nights of the season going 26-for-52 from the field (50 percent) and 8-for-18 from beyond the arc (44 percent). The Pirates also dominated the glass outrebounding UMBC 36-22.

Hampton stuck first with Noah Farrakhan hitting a three. The Retrievers held on to a slight advantage early on 9-7. Coach Ivan Thomas's squad picked up the defensive efforts helping the Pirates take a 16-9 lead before the first media timeout.  Farrakhan continued to be a spark plug for HU's offense producing 10 points in the first five minutes.

Coming out of the media timeout UMBC cut the Pirates advantage down to one possession. Hampton continued to fire on all cylinders on the offensive end. While Farrakhan was on the bench due to an early foul, George Beale Jr., Kyrese Mullen, and Eunique Rink carried on HU's hot start from the field. Beale Jr. finished the first half in double figures with 11 points while shooting 50 percent from the field.

With three consecutive threes by the Retrievers, UMBC took their first lead of the contest 30-29 since the 15:53 mark. Down the stretch for the Pirates Wayne Bristol Jr. started to find his rhythm from the field propelling Hampton to regain the lead. Coach Ivan Thomas's team made their free throws down the stretch to head into the half-up 40-36.

Coming out of the half, UMBC's Josh Odunowo's dunk made it a two-point contest. The Pirates continued to receive production from the bench with Xzaiver Long hitting a pair of free throws. Heading into the first media timeout of the final 20 minutes, both sides traded blows with neither the Pirates nor the Retireves gaining the edge.

Out of the timeout, Mullen made a layup from inside the paint sparking a 12-2 run by the Pirates. The Norfolk, Va. native finished tonight's contest with 10 points and 11 rebounds securing his second double-double of the season. While UMBC started to find its rhythm on the offensive end, Hampton was able to answer any advancement made by the Retrievers.
