Pirates Fall to Atlantic-10 Foe George Washington on the Road

WASHINGTON, D.C. … Hampton University men's basketball team fell on the road to Atlantic-10 foe George Washington 82-54. Both teams struggled from the field in the first half. George Beal Jr. was a spark off the bench for the Pirates throughout the contest scoring a game-high 19 points. With the Revolutionaries finding their rhythm in the second half, Hampton could not silence George Washington's offense. 

In the opening minute of the contest, George Washington's Trey Moss got the Revolutionaries on the board first.  Both teams struggled from the floor early in the game. George Washington went 3-10 from the field before the first five minutes while the Pirates were 1-6. With Coach Ivan Thomas's side playing stingy defense Hampton entered the first media timeout down by five 9-4.

Coming out of the timeout the Pirates got a spark on the offensive end from West Virginia Transfer Noah Farrakhan. The Newark, N.J. native finished the half with six points and two rebounds. While the Revolutionaries extended their lead to eight, Trevor Smith made a three bringing it back to within five 12-7. 

Hampton's shooting woes continued throughout the first half. The Pirates shot 23 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc. Beal Jr. provided a spark for HU off the bench. With Farrakhan picking up his second foul at the 6:28 mark, Beal Jr. answered the call.  The junior guard had a team-high eight points in the first 20 minutes. 

Coach Thomas's squad produced an advantage on the boards throughout the half. Hampton dominated the glass on the offensive end with 11 offensive rebounds.  Kyrese Mullen helped the Pirates gain the rebounding edge with eight boards in the first 20 minutes. Towards the end of the first half, George Washington took a double-digit lead 28-18. Hampton trimmed the Revolutionaries' advantage down to six in the closing moments of the half. With Darren Buchanan Jr. hitting a layup at the buzzer, the Pirates were down 32-24.

Coming out of the half,  Wayne Bristol Jr. scored the Pirate's first points with a fast break dunk. Bristol Jr. led Hampton in scoring in the second half. After a quiet first 20 minutes the Upper Marlboro, Md. native, finished the contest with 13 points. George Washington began the second frame with an 8-2 run going up 40-28. 

The Revolutionaries found their rhythm on the offensive end shooting 58 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Hampton shot an improved 34 percent from the field but could not silence the Revolutionaries' offense. Heading into the under-eight media timeout George Washington had the lead 66-41. While Hampton took care of the ball in the first half, HU committed nine turnovers in the second half leading to high-quality opportunities for the Revolutionaries.

Hampton men's basketball returns to action against Providence on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday's contest will be the Pirate's first nationally televised game of the 2024-25 season.
