Lady Pirates Drop Opening Contests at the Gardner-Webb Tournament

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (Feb. 23, 2024) … Hampton University's softball team began their third non-conference tournament this afternoon at the Gardner-Webb Tournament. The Lady Pirates opened up the day against Marist who made the NCAA Tournament last season. HU fell to Marist 10-3 and then dropped a close one to Gardner-Webb 4-3.

Game One

Angelina Branch got the start in the first contest. The freshman through the first two innings did not give up a run. However, in the top of the third, Branch gave up two runs. The Red Foxes started out the frame with a triple. With back-to-back singles, Marist still had runners in scoring position with no outs. While one more run came across, Hampton got out of the inning only down by three.

The Lady Pirates were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Brooke Williams sparked Hampton's offense with a lead-off single to left field. Later in the frame, Taylor Ivey drove in two runs on a double to right. Freshman Leah Maduro was used as a pinch hitter in the next at-bat. Maduro with a single to the outfield tied it up 3-3.

Marist bats caught fire once again in the fifth inning. The Red Foxes produced six hits during the frame and drove in five runs. Before the end of the contest, Marist was able to drive in two more runs making it 10-3. Only four Lady Pirates would record a hit in the first game.

Game Two

While Hampton trailed Gardner-Webb early, the Lady Pirates quickly responded. After giving up two runs in the first frame, HU tied it up in the top of the second. Aitirhna Aiken's single was the Lady Pirates only hit of the inning. With a walk and a hit by pitch, the bases would be loaded. Both Taylor Ivey and Kylie Hill drove in runs on a fielder's choice.

Leah Maduro got the start in the second contest but was pulled early in the second frame. While the Runnin' Bulldogs only had one hit, they were able to regain their two-run advantage. After giving up a run Emily Workman silenced Gardner-Webb's bats. In her four remaining innings of work, she did not give up another run.

Down to their final three outs, Coach Monique White's squad put pressure on Gardner-Webb. With her first hit of the contest, Ivey began the final frame with an infield single. Carmynn Bonner with runners on first and second drove a ball to the outfield. However, the Lady Pirates runner on second was thrown out at home. Hampton's Emily Kepple made it a one-run game on the next at-bat. The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up the final out of the frame, halting HU's late comeback.

The Lady Pirates continue the Gardner-Webb Tournament tomorrow against Lindenwood at 11:00 a.m. Following the game with the Lions, Hampton will face Marist with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
