Lady Pirates Split Day One of HU/NSU Classic

HAMPTON, Va. (Mar. 1, 2024) … Hampton University's Softball team opened up the HU/NSU with a win over FDU and a loss to Marist. In both contests, the Lady Pirates bats struggled to get going. However, with the HU's defense making plays Coach Monique White's squad escaped game one with a win. While Marist would not score more than three runs in an inning the Red Foxes were able to produce runs consistently.

Game One

Through the majority of game one, HU's Jada Evans and FDU's Brooklyn Shroyer were locked into a pitcher's dual. Heading into this afternoon's game Fairleigh Dickinson's Shroyer entered with a 1.33 ERA. During the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Pirates got on the board first. Carmyn Bonner started off the frame with a double to the gap between left and center field.  While HU's next batter picked up the first out of the inning, Senior Brooke Williams was able to drive Bonner in making it 1-0.

Jada Evans was off to a hot start not giving up a single run through four innings. However, after Hampton took the lead FDU found a way to to it up in the next frame. The Knights took advantage of a throwing error made by HU.

Coach Monique White's squad would be quick to respond in the bottom half of the stanza. Taylor Ivey sparked the Lady Pirates' bats with a single to left field. With Kylee Quinn reaching first on a walk, Hampton had runners on first and second. Kylie Hill picked up her first RBI of the afternoon with a single to the outfield. HU doubled its advantage on a wild pitch during Kepple's at-bat.

In the top of the seventh, Fairleigh Dickinson made it one run contest with no outs. During the next at-bat, the Lady Pirates' defense turned two while preventing the tying run from scoring. Hampton was able to get out of the jam with a pop-up to first base. Evans would pick up her first win of the season and Emily Workman earned her first save of the 2024 campaign.

Game Two

Marist got on the board first in the top of the second inning. After HU gave up a single to start the frame the Lady Pirates produced two quick outs. However, a triple from freshman Anna Sidlowski gave the Red Foxes an early advantage. During the following inning, Marist got on the board once more. After the Lady Pirates got the first out of the stanza, a throwing error made it 2-0.

Hampton committed three errors in game two of the HU/NSU Classic. HU in the bottom of the fourth had its first hit of the game. Freshman Leah Maduro was called on to pinch hit and delivered with a double to left center field. Maduro's double would be the first of her collegiate career. The Miami, Fla. native finished the contest with two hits

The Red Foxes' bats continued to produce throughout game two. In the final two innings alone Marist was able to produce five runs.  Heading into the bottom half of the frame, the Lady Pirates trailed 9-0. Maduro once again had a lead-off hit giving HU a baserunner early. While MU was able to string together back-to-back strikeouts, Hampton got on the board with a single to right field from Janae Lyles. Taylor Ivey cut Marist's advantage down to seven with another knock to the outfield. The Red Foxes were able to get the final out during the next at-bat halting HU's late push.
