Lady Pirates Drop Doubleheader to the Seahawks of UNCW

HAMPTON, Va. (March 10, 2024) … After inclement weather postponed Saturday's Coastal Athletic Association contest, the Lady Pirates closed out their first conference series with a doubleheader against UNCW. Hampton fell in both games this afternoon 5-0 to the Seahawks. UNCW got on the board quickly in the first half of the doubleheader. Game two started out as a pitcher's dual with neither side giving up an inch. The Seahawks would come out on top scoring late in the contest.

Game One

Hampton found themselves trailing early with UNCW producing three runs early in the top of the first. HU would give up four hits during the first frame but the two errors proved to be costly. Two of the Seahawk's three runs were unearned. In the bottom half of the first, the Lady Pirates had an early base runner with Taylor Ivey. Ivey was able to reach first on a single in the infield but advanced to second on a throwing error. During the next at-bat, Janae Lyles was able to reach first on a hit-by-pitch. However, UNCW got out of the frame producing back-to-back strikeouts.

Throughout the remainder of the game, the Seahawks were able to extend their advantage. One run came across with Skylar Stockton's home run to left field in the second inning. Later on in the top of the sixth, Stockton drove in another run. After the Lady Pirates gave up a walk, Stockton produced a double to left center field making it 5-0.

Hampton finished the first half of the doubleheader with only two hits. While Carmynn Bonner got the start for HU, Emily Workman would be called out of the bullpen. The sixth-year senior pitched 5.2 innings and only gave up three hits.

Game Two

Through the first five innings, Hampton's Emily Workman and UNCW's Kara Hammock both were off to strong starts on the mound. Either side struggled to record hits with the Seahawks having the only one through the first five frames. Along with only giving up a hit Workman also tallied two strikeouts.

The Seahawk's bats caught fire in the top of the sixth. UNCW was able to produce base runners early with their speed. They would start out the frame with back-to-back bunts that turned into singles. In the sixth inning alone the Seahawks recorded five hits. Before the end of the frame, UNCW had a five-run advantage.

In the Bottom of the seventh Taylor Ivey recorded a single up the middle giving HU its first hit of the contest. With the Lady Pirates running out of time, Hampton could not get on the board.
