Hampton Falls to Monmouth on a Walk-Off Single in the Bottom of the Seventh

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (March 15, 2024) …Hampton University softball opened this weekend's series against Monmouth with a 5-4 loss. While both teams were scoreless through three innings, HU got on the board first in the fourth frame. The Hawks would tie it 4-4 on a single to the outfield in the fifth. Monmouth in the final stanza of the contest, walked it off on a base knock to the outfield.

Jada Evans got the start for the Lady Pirates. In her seventh start of the season, Evans was able to tally three strikeouts while only walking one batter. In the first inning, Hampton was able to produce early baserunners. Emily Kepple in her first game back recorded HU's first hit of the game. The sixth-year senior went 1-3 from the plate in this afternoon's contest.

While both sides were scoreless through three innings Hampton got on the board first. With two outs HU had baserunners in scoring position with back-to-back walks. Camryn Thompson came in to pinch-hit for Kylie Hill. Thompson dropped a bunt down the third baseline loading the bases for Carmynn Bonner. On a deep ball to the outfield, Bonner with an inside-the-park home run made it 4-0. Bonner's homer would be the Lady Pirates' first one of the season.

In the bottom half of the fourth Monmouth quickly dug into HU's advantage. Hampton after walking the first batter got produced two consecutive outs. However, the Hawks brought in the runner on a triple to right center field. During the next at-bat, MU's Abby Warner hit a home run making it 4-3. Monmouth's bats continued to produce in the fifth frame. With three hits in the inning, the Hawks tied it up 4-4. 

Hampton continued to record hits in the final two innings, but the Lady Pirates were not able to bring a runner across the plate. Monmouth started out the bottom half of the seventh with two back-to-back singles. After giving up the two hits, Hampton got the first out of the frame in a fly ball to outfield. The Hawks were able to walk it off on the next at-bat with a single to the outfield.

The Lady Pirates continue their series with Monmouth tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
