HAMPTON, Va. (March 2, 2024) … It was Senior Day in Williamsburg and the Tribe gave fans something to cheer about. William & Mary (9-22, 4-14) connected on 15, three-pointers and led from wire-to-wire to post an 85-73 victory over Hampton (8-23, 3-15) and snap a nine-game losing streak in the regular season finale for both teams.
William & Mary scored the game's first nine points and never looked back. The Tribe's lead grew to double digits, 28-17, on a Tai Hamilton lay-up with 6:42 to go. The Tribe lead grew to as many as 14, 35-21 with 3:36 before settling for a 43-35 halftime advantage.
Sean Houpt had four treys and a free throw for 13 first half points.
William & Mary shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and eight of it's 15 first half baskets were three-pointers. Coach Edward Joyner Jr. shuffled his line-up and the bench chipped in 20 of Hampton's 35 first half points.
The second half started exactly as the first half had unfolded. The Tribe connected on three treys to go ahead, 52-35, while Hampton missed its first four shots and suffered three turnovers.
Another three-pointer by Houpt --- he had five in the game --- gave the Tribe its biggest lead, 60-42, with 15:25 left.
But the Pirates began to chip away at the lead.
Hampton outscored the Tribe, 10-2, to cut the lead to 62-52 with 12:06 left. William & Mary scored seven of the next nine points to lead 69-54 before Hampton began another run. A 10-0 Pirate rally, capped by a
Jerry Deng lay-up, made it 69-64 with 6:47 remaining.
But Hampton could get no closer the rest of the way.
Ja'Von Benson came off the bench to score 19 points for the Pirates, the only double-figure scorer for Hampton. He also had a team-high nine rebounds and blocked five shots.
Four William & Mary players scored double figures including Trey Moss (20), Gabe Dorsey (19), Sean Houpt (16) and Chase Lowe (13). In addition, Lowe had 13 rebounds to register a double-double.
With the conclusion of the regular season, the Pirates begin preparations for the CAA Championships which begin on March 8 in Washington, D.C.
