Hampton Softball Scores Late in the 11th to Defeat the Cougars

HAMPTON, Va. (March 22, 2024) … The Lady Pirates begin their game series against the Cougars of Charleston with a 6-5 win in extra innings. Charleston would be in control for most of the game but Hampton kept finding ways to keep the contest within striking distance. While HU was out of 12-8, the Lady Pirates still came out on top.

Coach Monique White's squad got the first hit of the contest, both sides were held quiet in the first inning. The Cougars early in the second frame recorded a triple to the right center. Charleston got on the board with a fielder's choice. In the following stanza, another run came across the plate for the Cougars making it 2-0.

Hampton's bats started to get going in the bottom of the third. HU had an early baserunner with Taylor Ivey's walk. While there would be two outs, Brooke Williams produced a single to the outfield advancing Ivey to third. Back-to-back walks cut the Cougars advantage down to one. With the bases loaded, Kylee Quinn ripped a single through the left side of the field tying it up 2-2.

Charleston would quickly respond in the next stanza scoring two runs on two hits. However, the Cougars took advantage of an error made by Hampton during the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Pirates made it a one-run contest. Before the Cougars could record an out HU had runners on first and second. During the next at-bat, Leah Maduro reached first on a fielder's choice but moved the lead runner to third. Hampton was able to bring in the lead run on a stolen base attempt.

With a run coming across in the top of the sixth inning Charleston once again had a two-run advantage. The Lady Pirates went hit-less in the bottom half of the frame leaving all up to the seventh. Hampton loaded up the bases on three straight walks from the Cougars Bullpen. Aiken came up clutch for HU once more with a single up the middle tying it up 5-5. Charleston got out of the frame picking up two quick outs.  With the score all tied the game would head into extra innings.

Through the first eighth, ninth, and 10th innings both sides held each other scoreless. While Hamtpon's bats had gone quiet, they came alive in the final stanza. Kepple started out the 11th with a single through the left side. Williams then followed it up with a double to the outfield placing runners on second and third. With another walk by the Cougar's bullpen, the bases would be loaded with no outs. While Charleston got the lead out at home, Williams scored on the throw to first walking off the contest.
