WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 9, 2024) … No. 6 seed Delaware (19-13) shot a sizzling 63 percent in the first half while limiting No. 11 seed Hampton (9-24) to 15 percent shooting to build a commanding lead and went on to defeat the Pirates, 80-50, in the second round of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championships in Washington, D.C.
Fresh off a 56-55 upset win over Elon in the opening round of the CAA Championships a day earlier, Hampton ran into a buzzsaw against Delaware. Delaware jumped to an early lead before a basket by
Jordan Nesbitt with 17:00 to go in the first half brought the Pirates within two points, 7-5. The Blue Hens then reeled off 17 straight points to lead, 28-7, with 7:53 to go in the half.
Two free throws and a field goal by
Kyrese Mullen made it 31-12 with 6:13 to go. But Delaware then scored the next 15 points over a 3:00 span to lead by 34, 46-12. Mullen's layup broke the streak before Delaware scored five of the last seven points to finish the half with a 51-16 advantage.
Delaware connected on five three-pointers while outrebounding the Pirates, 25-15 in the first half. Hampton struggled on offense with just 1-of-14 accuracy from three-point range. Gerald Drumgoole Jr. tallied 14 points in the first half as eight players scored for the Blue Hens in the first half. Mullen led Hampton with seven points.
The second half began much the way the first half ended. Delaware's lead grew to 45, 63-18, on a 12-point run by the Blue Hens. A
Jerry Deng three-pointer with 15:10 to go snapped the Delaware streak, making it 63-21.
Delaware led 70-32 midway through the second half before Hampton rallied and outscored the Blue Hens 18-10 to close out the game.
Mullen led the Pirates with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Jerry Deng finished with 13 points and
Tedrick Wilcox Jr. had 10. Hampton's bench chipped in 21 points. For Delaware, Drumgoole Jr. finished with 17 points while teammates Cavan Reilly had 14 and Jalun Trent scored 12 points in the game. The Blue Hens had 18 fastbreak points.
The game concludes the 2023-24 season for the Pirates.
