HAMPTON, Va. (April 3, 2024) – The Hampton women's tennis team (8-6) is set to compete in three dual matches in the next five days. Hampton hosts the Campbell Camels tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. before traveling to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Temple on April 7 at 9:00 a.m. before heading to Baltimore, Md. to face Coppin State on April 8.
Last week, the Lady Pirates defeated HBCU Rival Norfolk State 5-2 and fell against East Carolina 4-3. Meiri Okuwaki and Sofia Sokolova won both of their doubles matches as a pair. Mio Kozaki and Masa Mitic went 2-0 in singles play.
So Far This Season
Kozaki leads the Lady Pirates with a 9-4 singles record. Mitic follows at 8-4. Lucia Jorrin Fernandez, Diana Starodubtseva, and Okuwaki sit at seven wins. Sokolova is 6-6. The top doubles pair is Okuwaki and Sokolova at 9-1. Starodubtseva and Kozaki have earned a 5-5 (.500) record.
Scouting the Campbell Camels
Mike Stevens is in his fifth ear as coach of the Camels. The team boasts a 10-6 record and is currently on a two-match winning streak defeating Longwood (6-1) and Mount Olive (7-0).
Lily Chitambar leads Campbell with an 11-4 singles record. Chitambar and teammate Mariana Ossa are 5-1 as doubles partners.
Scouting the Temple Owls
Steve Mauro is in his 16th season as the women's tennis head coach at Temple. The Owls are 8-5 this season and most recently defeated Binghamton, 7-0.
Evie Wei is 5-3 in singles and Vineetha Mummadi is 4-2. Wei and Jessie Zheng boast a 6-1 doubles record.
Scouting the Coppin State Golden Eagles
Both of Coppin States men's and women's tennis teams have been coached by Ebonye Jones since 2018. The Golden Eagles are 0-8 this season and fell to Delaware State, 7-0, on March 30.
