Lady Pirates End Campbell Series With a 3-1 Loss

HAMPTON, Va. (April 7, 2024) … Hampton Softball closed out the three-game series against Coastal Athletic Association foe Campbell with a 3-1 loss. Both the Lady Pirates and Camels recorded four hits throughout the contest. Hampton would only commit one error in the seven-inning affair. While HU got on the board late they ran out of time to complete the comeback.

Campbell was able to get on the board first at the top of the second. Early on in the frame, the Camels produced a double to right field. After HU got the second out a wild throw bouncing off the bag brought the go-ahead run in. CU built upon its early advantage in the following inning. A triple to lead off the third put pressure on the Lady Pirates. However, Campbell only scored one run making it 2-0.

While the Camels did not record a hit in the sixth frame another run came across the plate. Hampton's bullpen issued a walk to start off the stanza. With a stolen base the runner would be in scoring position. Consecutive flyouts to centerfield by Campbell grew its to three.

The Lady Pirates' bats were firing on all cylinders recording three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Carmynn Bonner sparked Hampton's offense producing a single to the infield. Aitirhna Aiken followed up Bonner's single with a double to the outfield.  With two outs Brooke Williams came up clutch for HU. The Winslow, Ariz native, had a base knock to the shortstop to cut into Campbell's lead. Heading into the final frame, the Lady Pirates trailed the Camels by two.

Down to their last three outs, Hampton got a late hit from KKylie Hill. With Hampton's next two batters striking out, the Lady Pirates fell to Campbell 3-1. Freshman Angelina Branch got the start for Coach Monique White's squad. Branch was able to hold one of the conference's best offenses to three runs.

Hampton returns to action Friday taking on the Drexel Dragons.
