Lady Pirates Fall in Game Two to the Tigers, 5-3

HAMPTON, Va. (May 3, 2024) … Hampton University softball team fell in game two to Towson 5-3.  While the Lady Pirates offense was slow to start going hitless through four innings, a home run by Angelina Branch gave HU a spark. The Tigers produced three runs late to help hold on to their early advantage.

Both bullpens early on kept hits to a minimum. The Tigers tallied the first hit of the contest in the second inning. Towson struck first bringing two runs in the top of the third. Hampton was able to manufacture two quick outs, but a single up the middle kept the stanza alive. TU loaded up the bases taking advantage of an error by HU and a base knock in the infield. On a ball to the outfield, the Tigers brought in two runs.

Towson's Maddie Gardner had a dominant start to the contest. Gardner did not allow a single baserunner until the fourth inning. The Lady Pirates started to erase the Tiger's 2-0 lead in the fifth. With two outs on the board freshman Angelina Branch homered. Branch's solo shot to left field was her second home run of the 2024 season.

Towson once again was able to score two runs in the sixth taking advantage of another error made by the Lady Pirates. However, Coach Monique White's squad responded in the bottom half of the frame. Kylee Quinn began the inning with a leadoff base knock to the outfield. Taylor Ivey was able to score Quinn on a double to center field. Brooke Williams continued to have the hot bat with a double to make it 4-3. So far this week, Williams has gone 7-10 from the plate recording a pair of home runs, four doubles, and seven RBIs. After Leah Maduro's walk, Towson got out of the stanza on a groundout.

The Tiger's offense continued to produce runs in the seventh. TU started off the frame with a double to left field. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third. With its second hit of the stanza, Towson scored another run jumping back out to a two-run lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Hampton was not able to record a hit ending the contest.

The Lady Pirates return to action tomorrow for Senior Day against the Tigers at noon.
