Lady Pirates Tie Rival Howard 0-0 in Home Opener

HAMTPON, Va. (Aug. 18, 2024) … The Lady Pirates secured a tie 0-0 in the home opener against Howard. Entering today's match, Hampton had never produced a tie against the Bison in the program's history. While HU was out-shot 14-3, freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Howell produced seven saves to keep the clean sheet.

Coach Scot Vorwold's side throughout the early minutes halted Howard's offense. The Bison could not fire off a shot until the 15th minute of the match. Early on in the match, the Lady Pirates earned a corner kick in the fourth minute. However, the ball into the box from the corner kick went long.

After the early offensive woes, the Bison started to challenge the Hampton's young goalkeeper. Throughout the next five minutes, Howard rattled off four shots. Howard's Mimi Richards chance was on goal but Howell made the save keeping the contest tied at 0-0.

In the waning minutes of the half, Nylah Jennings recorded Hampton's first shot of the half. Jennings chance was just off target nearly missing the right post. Before the end of the first half, Rachel Suttie picked up a yellow card.

Coming out of the half both sides continued to trade blows. Ece Lea Evin kick-started the Lady Pirates offense producing a shot in the 55th minute. The Bison continued to create chances tallying seven shots in the second half. Only three of Howard's seven shots were on goal.

Throughout the remainder of the half, Hampton's defense continued to hold the match scoreless. Zaria Ascue gave the Lady Pirates another strong opportunity to score. In the 77th minute, Ascue's shot was blocked by a Howard defender. During the final minutes of the match, the Bison created one more chance to score. Howard's strike just missed the goal going off the right post.

Hampton returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 25 on the road at Saint Peter's. The match against the Peacocks is set to begin at noon.
