Hampton Women’s Soccer Heads North to Take on Saint Peter’s

HAMPTON, Va. (Aug. 23, 2024) ... The Lady Pirates return to action after forcing a draw in the home opener against Howard. Hampton's match on Sunday against Saint Peter's will be the eighth meeting all-time and the sixth in Jersey City, N.J. The match at Jaroschak Field is set to begin at noon.

A Look at the Lady Pirates

Historically, the matchup has favored the Peacocks with Saint Peter's leading the series 5-1-1. The Lady Pirates' win came at home during the 2018 season (3-0). 40 percent of the matches played between the Lady Pirates and the Peacocks have been decided by one goal or less. In the series last matchup, Hampton fell to Saint Peter's 5-2.

So far this season Coach Scot Vorwold's side has already achieved many firsts. For the first time since the 2021 campaign, the Lady Pirates have posted a shutout. Hampton's match against Howard was the first time HU tied the Bison in program history. With the success from the previous match, the Lady Pirates have produced their best start in three years. 

The Lady Pirates recruiting class from this summer has made an immediate impact on the pitch. Annika Neubauer and Aileen Perez have started both matches while playing every minute. Kaitlyn Howell got her first start in goal and made six saves. The Pellham, N.Y. native, has a 1.24 goals allowed average. Howell is one of six goalkeepers in the Coastal Athletic Association to post a shutout this season.

A Look at the Peacocks

Saint Peter's posted a 4-11 overall record and went 2-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2023. The Peacocks are coached by Julia Bazi who enters her fifth season with the program. Bazi is a former Olympian and two-time FIFA World Cup competitor. Prior to becoming the head coach, she was at the Fashion Institute of Technology. In her three seasons with FIT, she led the Tigers to their winningest season in school history en route to being named the NJCAA Region XV Coach of the Year.

In their last time out the Peacocks defeated South Carolina Upstate 2-0. Last season, the Spartans had a record of 11-4-4. Both of Saint Peter's goals came in the first half with Kiana Tulloch and Lucia Mansilla Medina. Mansilla Medina also scored in the season opener against Howard and tallied one assist. Mansilla Medina and Tulloch both lead the Peacocks in assists.
