Hampton Women’s Soccer Prepare for Final Non-Conference Match of the 2024 Season

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 15, 2024) … Coach Scot Vorwold's side closes out the non-conference portion of their schedule on the road against Virginia State. Monday's contest will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Hampton is coming off its first win at Powhatan Field defeating Lincoln 2-0. The Trojans are still searching for their first win of the season. 

A Look at the Lady Pirates

Hampton in its last time out earned its second win of the 2024 campaign. The Lady Pirates were able to strike towards the end of both halves. Sanaa Perry found the back of the net in the 40th minute scoring her second goal of the season. During the final three minutes of the match, Freshman Ellen Van Caenegem found the back of the net. Kaitlyn Howell finished the contest with four saves while earning her second shutout of the 2024 campaign. 

The Lady Pirates have achieved many firsts under Coach Vorwold's first season with the program. In the opening week of the season, Hampton drew Howard. HU also won its first game since the 2022 season defeating Delaware State 3-1. The program in its seasons had never had eight different goal scorers in a season. 

Through seven matches Hampton on average committed 9.83 fouls per match which is the second most in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Lady Pirates have scored the seventh most goals in the conference. Both Perry and Van Caenegem have scored a team-high two goals. Van Caenegem also leads Hampton in shots with 19 and shot goal tallying seven. The Forney, Texas native, went scoreless through the first four contests but has found her rhythm scoring in two of the last three matches.

  • 5.0: Kaitlyn Howell leads the CAA in saves per game.
  • 11.2: The Lady Pirates are taking the seventh most shots per match in the conference.
  • 7: Hampton has committed the third most yellow cards in the CAA.
  • 25: Kaitlyn Howell sits fourth in the conference for total saves this season.

A Look at the Trojans

Virginia State enters Monday's match with a 0-3 overall record. Last season the Trojans ended the the 2023 season with two wins defeating Sweet Briar and Allen. VSU is coached by Anthony Andrews who enters his second season with the program. Andrews before taking the position spent time coaching at levels of the game. 

The Trojans have found the back of the net once this season. Sophomore Gabrielle Franklin scored in the season opener against Ferrum. The Silver Spring, Md. native, contributed on the offensive end during her freshman campaign. Franklin started all 14 games and scored one goal while tallying an assist.
