Hampton Women's Soccer Back on the Road facing Elon

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 28, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer is back on the road facing Elon at Rudd Field. Sunday's match against the Phoenix is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.

Prior to joining the Coastal Athletic Association the Lady Pirates had faced EU one time. Both programs have faced each other a total of three times with Elon leading the series 3-0. The previous meeting was on the road and Hampton fell to the Phoenix. 

Last time out, the Lady Pirates fell to Delaware at Powhatan Field on Sept. 26, 1-0. For the majority of the match, Hampton's defense was able to keep the Blue Hens off the board. Coach Scot Vorwold's backline was anchored by Taylor Lewis-Richardson, Keri Geter, Evan-Nichole Whitaker, and Christina Boluda Piqueras. The group blocked a total of six shots. Delaware scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute. Avery John got the start in goal for the Lady Pirates. The Rosenfield, Germany native, finished the match with six saves almost tying her career high (7). 

So far this season, the duo of Sanaa Perry and Ellen Van Caenegem have been key contributors for Hampton. Perry and Van Caenegem's seven goals during the 2024 campaign is 47 percent of the team's total goals. Freshman Nylah Jennings has had a solid start to her collegiate career. The Bowie, Md. native in 11 matches has scored twice and contributed two assists. 

Elon is coached by Neil Payne who is in his seventh season with the program. The Phoenix have posted a record of 3-9-5 in 2023. So far this year, EU has not lost a single match. During the non-conference portion of their schedule, the Phoenix only had one draw against High Point  0-0. Elon's strong start to the season has carried over into conference play. The Phoenix are 2-0 in the CAA defeating Northeastern 2-1 and Stony Brook 2-0. 

Freshman goalkeeper Katie Bisgrove is off to a strong start this season. Bisgrove ranks fourth in the country for save percentage. The Ridgewood, N.J. native sits second in the conference for shutouts with four this season. Bisgrove also is eighth in the country for goals against average giving up 0.33 goals per match. b
