Tribe Tops Pirates 49-7 in Football Action

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Sept. 28, 2024) … In a game that matched the Coastal Athletic Association's top two running attacks, William & Mary (4-1) prevailed over Hampton (3-2) 49-7 before a crowd of 11,317 at Zable Stadium. The loss snapped Hampton's three-game winning streak. The Tribe finished the game with 632 yards offense while Hampton had 214 yards offense.
 
It was a back-and-forth first quarter. In the early-going, William & Mary turned the ball over on a fumble at the Tribe 38-yard line. But Hampton was unable to capitalize as the Pirates threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage.
 
After the Hampton defense held, Pirate quarterback Chris Zellous engineered an efficient drive to put the Pirates on the board first. Hampton moved the ball 70 yards in 11 plays capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Elijah Burris with 4:48 to go in the first quarter to put the Pirates ahead 7-0.
 
William & Mary answered just before the end of the first quarter. Taking over at its own 10-yard line, William & Mary moved the ball 90 yards in eight plays and tied the score on a seven-yard pass from Darius Wilson to DreSean Kendrick.
 
After a short Hampton punt gave the Tribe the ball at the 30-yard line, William & Mary drove 70 yards in five plays to take the lead. Malachi Imoh ran 20 yards to the Hampton 14. On the next play from scrimmage, Imoh rushed 14 yards for the go-ahead score with 9:18 left in the first half.
 
The Tribe widened their lead to 21-7 when Bronson Yoder dashed 36 yards for a touchdown with 2:23 to go before halftime. The drive covered 76 yards in six plays.
 
In Hampton's last possession of the first half., the Pirates used just :23 in a three-and-out possession giving William & Mary the ball at midfield with 1:50 to go. The Tribe drove to the one-yard line before the Pirate defense stiffened and held the Tribe at bay as the clock expired.
 
After Hampton's first quarter touchdown drive, the Tribe amassed 319 yards offense limiting the Pirates to 50 as William & Mary reeled off the final 21 points of the half. The Tribe gained 180 yards on the ground on 25 plays (7.2 yards per carry) while the Pirates had 78 yards on the ground in 19 rushes (4.1 yards per carry).
 
Pinned at its own goal line on fourth-and-16 midway through the third quarter, Hampton punted and the Tribe took possession at the 28-yard line. Wilson's five-yard TD run and Bernstein's extra point made is 28-7 after three quarters. The Tribe amassed 93 yards in the third quarter while limiting Hampton to 28.
 
The Pirates moved the ball to the 34-yard early in the fourth quarter but turned the ball over on downs. The Tribe moved 66 yards to score with 8:16 left in the contest when Imoh scored his second touchdown of the evening on a four-yard run to give William & Mary a 35-7 advantage.
 
Back on offense, reserve quarterback Tyler Hughes rambled 56 yards to the Hampton 12-yard line. Hughes put the finishing touches on the drive running up the middle to give the Tribe a 42-7 with 5:44 remaining.
 
The Pirates were unable to mount a drive and the Tribe mounted another drive. Hughes dashed untouched 66 yards for a TD making it 49-7 with 3:15 left. Hampton was unable to move the ball and the Tribe ran out the clock.
 
The Tribe continued its winning streak against the Pirates, prevailing in all 10 meetings between the two teams.
 
The Pirates return home to host Rhode Island on Oct. 5 at Armstrong Stadium.
