Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady Pirates Drop Match Against Mississippi Valley State 3-2

ITTA BENA, Miss. (Sept. 3, 2024) … Hampton women's soccer fell on the road to Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Mississippi Valley State 3-2. The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early lead scoring the match's first goal. Before the half, the Devilettes found the back of the net and scored twice early on in the final 45 minutes. HU found a way to make it a one-goal contest but could not score the equalizer. 

Kaitlyn Howell got the start in goal for the Lady Pirates. Mississippi Valley State provided a challenge early with a shot at the second minute. However, MVSU's chance was wide left. Only one of the Devilettes' first three shots were on goal. In the 17th minute, Howell earned her first save of the match. During the same time frame of the contest, Hampton jumped out to a 1-0 advantage. Highly touted freshman Nylah Jennings produced her first collegiate strike while Ellen Van Caenegem earned the assist. 

The Lady Pirates constructed two more shots in the half and both were on goal. In the waning time left in the first half, MVSU tied the match with a goal by Liana Bryant. With the contest tied both sides held each other's offense in check not allowing a single shot before halftime. 

To begin the second frame, Hampton continued to pressure the Devilette's defense producing two corner kicks. After HU's corner is the 48th, MVSU took the lead off of a penalty kick. Before the 60th-minute mark, Mississippi Valley State jumped out to a two-goal advantage. 

Hampton's Annkia Nuebauer brought the match back within one. Sofia Jimenez picked up her first assist as a Lady Pirate. Coach Scot Vorwold's side continued to produce shots. MVSU's goalkeeper kept making saves. Hampton's defense found its rhythm in the final 30 minutes not allowing a shot. During the closing moments of the match, HU's Ellen Van Caenegem and Zaria Ascue received yellow cards. 

Hampton returns to action next Sunday, Sept. 8 at Delaware State. The match is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
