Lady Pirates Close Out Weekend on the Road Against Delaware State

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 5, 2024) … Coach Scot Vorwold's Lady Pirates close out the weekend with a match against Delaware State on Sunday, Sept. 8. Since the program's inception, Hampton has faced the Hornets six times. The most recent matchup came during the 2022 season where the contest ended in a 1-1 tie. The last three meetings have been played in Dover, Del. with all being decided by one or fewer goals.

A Look at the Lady Pirates

Hampton is coming off a 3-2 road loss to Mississippi Valley State. The Lady Pirates jumped out to a one-goal advantage in the 17th minute of the match. Freshman Nylah Jennings scored her first collegiate goal and Ellen Van Caenegem earned her first assist of the season. Before the end of the half, the Devilettes scored tying the score at 1-1. Early on in the final 45 minutes, Mississippi Valley State produced two goals. However, in the 64th minute, Annika Neubauer scored bringing the contest back to within one. While Hampton did not allow a shot in the final 30 minutes, HU could not manufacture the equalizer. 

Through four games this season, the Lady Pirates have surpassed their non-conference goal total from the 2023 campaign. While one player has yet to score multiple goals, Hampton has had five different student-athletes find the back of the net: Sofia Jimenez, Nylah Jennings, Annika Neubauer, Sanaa Perry, and Makayla Wade. Jimenez, a native of Parra Coahila, Mexico leads the team in points producing an assist last time out. 

Only two Lady Pirates have played every minute this season. Annika Nuebauer and Keri Geter have anchored HU's back line. Sophomore Evan-Nichole Whitaker is close behind starting in every match while tallying 358 minutes of action. In three games played, freshman Kaitlyn Howell has already posted a shutout.

A Look at the Hornets  

Delaware State enters the match with a 0-5 overall record. The Hornets will face Manhattan on Friday, Sept. 6 before the contest against Hampton. In all five games played so far this season, Delaware State has been shutout. The Hornets are coached by Natasha Ademakinwa who enters her first season with the program. Before becoming the head coach at DSU, Ademakinwa was at Shawnee State tallying 46 wins in six years. 

The Hornets return its top goal scorer Nicole Cargill. During Cargill's freshman campaign, she found the back of the net twice. So far the Colon, Panama native, has taken a team-high seven shots. Delaware State brought in eight freshmen this year. Seven of the eight signees have seen the field. Both Trinity Surowiec and Nileigha Williams have started in 80 percent of the matches played this season.
